Background of the Study:
Traditional farming practices in Ekpoma Local Government have sustained rural communities for generations through indigenous knowledge and labor-intensive techniques. These methods, which include organic fertilization, intercropping, and seasonal planting, have fostered resilient agricultural systems (Afolabi, 2023). However, the rapid introduction of modern technology in agriculture—such as mechanization, chemical inputs, and digital farming tools—has begun to transform these traditional practices (Bamidele, 2024). While modern technology offers increased efficiency and productivity, it also poses challenges to the preservation of indigenous knowledge and sustainable farming methods (Segun, 2025). The study investigates how the adoption of modern technology affects traditional agricultural practices, examining the balance between innovation and the retention of ecological farming techniques. By analyzing both the benefits and drawbacks of technological interventions, the research aims to propose models that harmonize modern methods with traditional wisdom, ensuring sustainable agricultural development (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
The influx of modern technology in Ekpoma is altering traditional farming practices, potentially leading to a loss of indigenous agricultural knowledge and unsustainable practices. This shift raises concerns about the long-term viability of traditional methods in ensuring food security and environmental sustainability (Bamidele, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the impact of modern technology on traditional farming.
To assess the benefits and drawbacks of technological integration in agriculture.
To propose integrative models that combine modern and traditional practices.
Research Questions:
How does modern technology affect traditional farming practices?
What are the positive and negative impacts on agricultural sustainability?
How can traditional and modern methods be effectively integrated?
Research Hypotheses:
Modern technology significantly alters traditional farming methods.
The integration of technology improves productivity but risks losing indigenous practices.
Hybrid models can sustain agricultural productivity and preserve traditional knowledge.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant in guiding agricultural policy to balance innovation with the preservation of indigenous farming techniques. It provides a framework for sustainable agricultural practices that benefit both farmers and the environment (Segun, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the impact of modern technology on traditional farming practices in Ekpoma Local Government, Edo State.
Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Farming: Indigenous agricultural practices passed through generations.
Modern Technology: Contemporary tools and techniques used in agriculture.
Sustainability: The ability to maintain productive agricultural practices over time.
